SOS Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems of all ages, with a special focus on children from 12 months to 5 years old. The SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems in children of all ages, with a special focus on children from 12 months to 5 years old. It integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. This is a prerequisite for Online Advanced SOS courses.

STAR Institute offers the option to audit this course at half cost of tuition for those who have previously completed a Basic 3-Day or 4-Day SOS Approach to Feeding Conference and would like to attend again as a “refresher." A certificate of attendance verifying course completion is required prior to arrival.  Select the SOS Basic 4-Day Course AUDIT option during registration to receive this special rate.

If participants of the group must pay separately, please:

  1. Register all participants together OR separately and select the “Check/Money Order” option
  2. Send the names of all participants in your group to Caraly Walker at caraly.walker@spdstar.org by March 18, 2018
  3. Once at least 5 registrations are received, the invoices will be adjusted with the discount
  4. Each participant may pay online by credit card or send a check

Groups must be determined and paid in full before the start of the conference.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing no later than February 7, 2019 to receive a refund minus $50 processing fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after February 7, 2019. Registrations may be substituted or deferred to a future conference. Staff must be notified of substitutions at least 24 hours before the start of the event. Registrations cancelled due to a family emergency or other unexpected event or illness will be deferred to a future SOS Approach to Feeding Conference sponsored by STAR Institute.

In the event the program must be cancelled due to illness, fire, strikes, war, acts of God, terrorism or other causes that would prevent the event from taking place, STAR Institute will attempt to reschedule the event. If the event is unable to be rescheduled, STAR Institute will refund all tuition fees paid. Costs incurred for nonrefundable travel arrangements or other related individual expenses will not be refunded by STAR Institute.


Kay A. Toomey, PhD, is a Pediatric Psychologist who has worked with children who don’t eat for almost 30 years. She has developed the SOS Approach to Feeding as a family centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems. Dr. Toomey acted as the Clinical Director for Toomey & Associates, Inc.’s Feeding Clinic for six years and SOS Feeding Solutions at STAR Institute for eight years. She is currently the President of Toomey & Associates, Inc., and acts as a Clinical Consultant to the Feeding Clinic at STAR Institute.

Deborah Lagerborg, CCC-SLP, specializes in feeding disorders and dysphagia in infants and children. She works as a Pediatric Feeding Specialist and Speech Pathologist for Developmental Disabilities Resource Center.

Lindsay Beckerman, MOT, OTR/L, specializes in feeding difficulties in atypical learners, including children and teens with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, and multisensory processing difficulties. She works as a pediatric feeding specialist with the SOS Feeding Solutions team at STAR Institute.

Advanced SOS Topics

The Online Advanced SOS topics have been designed to further the skills of professionals who have already attended an SOS Approach to Feeding Basic 3-day or 4-day Course. Advanced SOS courses are only available online and are accessible 24/7. Choose the topics relevant to your practice and view them at your convenience day or night. Available at spduniversity.spdstar.org. The Basic Course is a prerequisite for purchasing online Advanced SOS courses.

Continuing Education


This course is offered for 2.85 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level, Professional content area). This course will focus on treatment using the SOS Approach to Feeding and will not discuss other similar or related treatments.

Participants requiring ASHA CEUs will be required to complete an ASHA CEU Participant Form at the end of the conference and return it to a STAR Institute staff member or volunteer. ASHA CEUs cannot be awarded retroactively.
