The SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems in children of all ages, with a special focus on children from 12 months to 5 years old. It integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. This is a prerequisite for Online Advanced SOS courses.

Auditing

STAR Institute offers the option to audit this course at half cost of tuition for those who have previously completed a Basic 3-Day or 4-Day SOS Approach to Feeding Conference and would like to attend again as a “refresher." A certificate of attendance verifying course completion is required prior to arrival.  Select the SOS Basic 4-Day Course AUDIT option during registration to receive this special rate.

If participants of the group must pay separately, please:

  3. Once at least 5 registrations are received, the invoices will be adjusted with the discount

Groups must be determined and paid in full before the start of the conference.


Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing no later than October 24, 2019 to receive a refund minus $50 processing fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after October 24, 2019. Registrations may be substituted or deferred to a future conference. Staff must be notified of substitutions at least 24 hours before the start of the event. Registrations cancelled due to a family emergency or other unexpected event or illness will be deferred to a future SOS Approach to Feeding Conference sponsored by STAR Institute.


In the event the program must be cancelled due to illness, fire, strikes, war, acts of God, terrorism or other causes that would prevent the event from taking place, STAR Institute will attempt to reschedule the event. If the event is unable to be rescheduled, STAR Institute will refund all tuition fees paid. Costs incurred for nonrefundable travel arrangements or other related individual expenses will not be refunded by STAR Institute.


Presenters

Dr. Kay A. Toomey is a Pediatric Psychologist who has worked with children who don’t eat for almost 30 years.  She has developed the SOS Approach to Feeding as a family centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems.  Dr. Toomey speaks nationally and internationally about her approach.  She also acts as a consultant to Gerber Products.  Dr. Toomey helped to form The Children’s Hospital – Denver’s Pediatric Oral Feeding Clinic, as well as the Rose Medical Center’s Pediatric Feeding Center.  Dr. Toomey co-chaired the Pediatric Therapy Services Department at Rose Medical Center prior to entering private practice.  Dr. Toomey acted as the Clinical Director for Toomey & Associates, Inc.’s Feeding Clinic for six years and SOS Feeding Solutions at STAR Institute for eight years. Dr. Toomey is currently the President of Toomey & Associates, Inc., and acts as a Clinical Consultant to the Feeding Clinic at STAR Institute.

Dr. Erin Sundseth Ross
is a Speech Pathologist with a Doctoral degree in Clinical Sciences – Health Services Research.  She completed a two-year post-doctoral training in the Section of Nutrition and is a Clinical Instructor in the School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Colorado Denver.  Dr. Ross has over 25 years of experience working in the NICU within several HealthONE hospitals, and with children when she was at the SOS Feeding Solutions clinic in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Ross is the creator of the SOFFI Method, a feeding program for use in the NICU.  She has specialized in the development of feeding skills, and the etiology and treatment of feeding and growth problems in infants and very young children from initial hospitalization through the first 5 years of life.
 
Lindsay Beckerman, MOT, OTR/L
received her Master of Occupational Therapy degree from Ohio State University. She currently works in a private practice with children, teens, and adults with feeding challenges in their home and community as well as Developmental FX, a non-profit clinic supporting children with a wide variety of developmental needs. Prior to this, she worked as a Pediatric Feeding Specialist at SOS Feeding Solutions at the STAR Institute with Dr. Lucy Jane Miller. She specializes in feeding difficulties in atypical learners, including children and teens with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, and multisensory processing difficulties. Lindsay has also worked as a member of a multidisciplinary team with Autism Spectrum Disorders, SPD, emotional/behavioral disorders and feeding problems. Lindsay has completed the STAR Institute’s Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Intensive Mentorship Programs and is a certified DIR Floortime Provider.  Lindsay also serves as a board member for Charlotte’s Day, a non-profit group that helps to provide posturally supportive chairs to children in feeding therapy.

Note: Parents/caregivers are not able to attend unless they are accompanied by their child's therapist.


Learning Objectives

  • List the seven areas of human function that need to be examined to provide a comprehensive Feeding Assessment.
  • Identify at least five of the oral, sensory, motor, cognitive or emotional developmental milestones key to being able to eat well.
  • List three reasons why children won’t eat, as based on learning theory principles.
  • Differentiate classical and operant conditioning principles as applied to resolving feeding problems.
  • Identify at least four of the necessary components of an SOS Approach to Feeding program for babies, toddlers and young children in either an individual or group therapy session.
  • List all three requirements for building a Food Hierarchy.
  • Identify at least one play based strategy for progressing a child up each of the 6 major Steps on the Steps to Eating Hierarchy. 


Advanced SOS Topics

The Online Advanced SOS topics have been designed to further the skills of professionals who have already attended an SOS Approach to Feeding Basic 3-day or 4-day Course. Advanced SOS courses are only available online and are accessible 24/7. Choose the topics relevant to your practice and view them at your convenience day or night. Available at spduniversity.spdstar.org. The Basic Course is a prerequisite for purchasing online Advanced SOS courses.



Continuing Education

ASHA

This course is offered for 2.85 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level, Professional content area). This course will focus on treatment using the SOS Approach to Feeding and will not discuss other similar or related treatments.

Participants requiring ASHA CEUs will be required to complete an ASHA CEU Participant Form at the end of the conference and return it to a STAR Institute staff member or volunteer. ASHA CEUs cannot be awarded retroactively.

STAR Institute for SPD is an AOTA Approved Provider of Continuing Education. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
