Mental Health Mentorship Program
Our innovative Mental Health Intensive Mentorship consists of a three-day course where mental health providers develop a sensory processing lens to view behaviors associated with presenting mental health concerns. Participants will develop critical thinking pathways for Sensory Processing Disorder recognition and impact on clients’presenting problem areas and develop a toolbox of assessment strategies and resources to use in practice for evaluation, referral and education.

Roianne Ahn, PhD
Psychologist, STAR Institute for SPD
Dr. Roianne Ahn is passionate about social success for people with Sensory Processing Disorder and committed to sharing the tools to achieve it! Dr. Ahn, a licensed psychologist who is trained in the DIR/Floortime approach, infuses the DIR relationship-based play model into every aspect of her work with children, teenagers, adults, and families. Whether providing consultation, testing, therapy, or coaching, she focuses on creating positive, joyful relationship experiences that support and facilitate long-term learning. Through consultation, testing, therapy, and coaching, she helps individuals and caregivers understand the neurobiology underlying SPD and how to help those with SPD successfully learn, relate, and grow!

Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L
Director of Education & Occupational Therapist, STAR Institute for SPD
Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L has been a practicing pediatric occupational therapist for over 20 years. She received advanced training in sensory integration (SIPT certification), listening therapy (Therapeutic Listening), feeding therapy (SOS) and infant massage (CIMI). Mim’s work with children and youth has occurred in a variety of settings including early intervention, school based, clinic based, mental health and private practice. She received her MSW in 2012 with an emphasis in non-profit management. Mim’s work as a social worker has included case management, program development, and program management. She has taught both graduate level and professional continuing education courses since 2013. 

Rachel Balderrama, MEd
Family Counselor, STAR Institute for SPD
Rachel brings to STAR Institute a breadth of experiences and skills. She graduated with her Bachelor’s of Arts from the State University of West Georgia. Rachel received her Master’s in Education in School Counseling from Georgia State University and is a licensed Professional School Counselor. Following three years of work as a high school counselor, Rachel served for two years in Burkina Faso as a Peace Corps volunteer, working in the sector of Girls’ Education and Empowerment. Due to this work, she founded and is the Executive Director of a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about gender equality and building schools in poor African communities.  Prior to coming to STAR Institute, Rachel worked in community mental health with families of children and teenagers who were in the foster care, adoptive, juvenile or truancy court systems.  This multi-faceted work included conducting clinical assessments, providing consultative services for Child and Protective Services, and providing counseling and psycho-education for families and children. Rachel conducted seminars and mentored other staff on assessment procedures. Rachel has completed the STAR Institute Intensive Mentorship Program Level 1. As a STAR Institute Family Counselor, Rachel is passionate about educating, supporting and empowering families as they seek to improve quality of life for their children and themselves.

Courtney McDonnell, PsyD
Staff Psychologist, STAR Institute for SPD
Courtney is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Colorado. She earned her doctorate of psychology (PsyD) from the University of Denver in 2013, specializing in the areas of child and adolescent psychology, trauma, and psychological assessment. Courtney started at the STAR Institute as a staff psychologist on the Family Support Services Team in 2016

Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR
Founder, STAR Institute for SPD
Dr. Miller brings a wealth of research and treatment experience to share with participants, having authored more than 75 articles and two books about SPD and sensory issues. Her nine norm-referenced scales include: Miller Assessment for Preschoolers, Japanese Miller Assessment for Preschoolers, First STEP, Primer Paso, Toddler and Infant Motor Evaluation, Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised, Stoelting-Brief Intelligence Scale, Short Sensory Profile, Miller Function and Participation scale, and the new Goal-Oriented Assessment of Lifeskills. The Sensory Over and Under-Responsivity Scales is also currently under development. She has received the Award of Merit, the highest award given by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award by the State of Colorado.


Cost
The full tuition for this program is $500. Upon submitting the application, there is a non-refundable deposit of $100 (applicable toward the $500 tuition). For those accepted into the program,the $100 deposit is not refundable should you cancel your registration. However, if for any reason we are unable to accept your application, your deposit will be fully refunded.


Who Should Attend
Licensed Mental Health Providers and Registered Psychotherapists. Those holding a candidate permit or a provisional license are also welcome to attend.


Learning Objectives

  1. Identify and describe foundations of sensory processing functions.
  2. Utilize sensory language and concepts to describe clinical observations of client behavior.
  3. Develop hypotheses through assessment regarding possible sensory contributors to behavior presentations.
  4. Consider sensory components in differential diagnosis process.
  5. Enhance foundational understanding of neurological contributors to associated presentations of ASD, ADHD, Anxiety Disorder across the lifespan.
  6. Identify issues associated with sensory processing disorder in various environments (home, school, community) and how they contribute clients’ presenting problems across the lifespan.
  7. Compare major components of typical development vs. uneven development vs. global delays in development for children and youth.
  8. Recognize signs of when to refer, to who and what their treatment should look like.
  9. Develop tool box of assessment tools and resources to use in practice for evaluation, referral, and education of clients, families, educators and other support team members.

Cancellation Policy

We require a minimum of 6 participants to run each Mental Health Mentorship session. Thus, it is sometimes necessary to change the dates a session is offered or to cancel a session. Participants are contacted at the earliest opportunity in the event of a scheduling change or cancellation. However, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone a scheduled session up to 5 weeks before the beginning date of each course. Please consider this when making any non-refundable travel arrangements. If the program is cancelled, all tuition payments will be refunded.

The tuition amount includes a $100 nonrefundable administrative fee per program. STAR Institute reserves the right to charge this fee for multiple participant transfers. Participant substitutions (a participant's place in program is filled by another person from the same organization) are not allowed without prior approval by the STAR Institute staff. The tuition less the administrative fee will be refunded if STAR Institute receives notice of cancellation at least 15 business days prior to the program start date. The full tuition will be charged to participants who cancel 14 business days or less before the program start or who fail to appear for the program.
