Off-site Level 1 Mentorship Program

Working in a group setting (15-25), participants of STAR Institute Intensive Mentorship Level I learn to apply clinical reasoning through lectures, video treatment observation and analysis with experienced STAR faculty.

  • Observe children in videotaped1:1 therapy with experienced STAR Institute Treatment Center therapists using combined occupational therapy (OT) and listening therapy (LT).
  • Receive group processing/supervision guided by faculty level clinicians from the STAR Institute.
  • Learn about the newest assessment tools for the SPD population.
  • Opportunity for small group discussions specific to practice areas.

Renee Allen, MS, OTR/L
Faculty, STAR Institute 

Renee has practiced pediatric occupational therapy since receiving her Master’s Degree from Boston University in 2000. Her professional experiences include working in Early Intervention, working with the deaf/blind student population at Perkin’s School for the Blind in Boston, and providing treatment in two private sensory-focused clinics. She provided clinical treatment at the STAR Institute from 2008-2011. Currently, Renee owns a private practice providing OT to children 0-6 years in their homes or in her private clinic. She is Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT) certified, and holds an intermediate level certification in the DIR /Floortime Model. She spends her free time hiking, skiing and enjoying Colorado with her husband and two children.

Michele Parkins, MS, OTR
Faculty, STAR Institute

Michele is an occupational therapist, specializing in working with children with sensory processing disorder and autism. She currently works with children and families at her private practice – Great Kids Place - in Rockaway, New Jersey. Prior to this she worked in schools for ten years infusing sensory integration, visual spatial, and DIR goals throughout daily activities and curriculum. Michele has been using, learning, and teaching the DIR model for over ten years. She is faculty of both Profectum Academy and the Sensory Treatment and Research Institute. Michele is DIR and SIPT certified with advanced training in visual spatial capacities. She co-developed a unique handwriting program – Connect Experience Write® – that highlights the importance of affective engagement in learning as well as sensory integration using music and movement to teach letter formation and pre-writing skills. Michele is passionate about working with families and other therapists and she continues to do so as a clinician and educator. 


Cost
The full tuition for this program is $1,675. Upon submitting the application, there is a non-refundable deposit of $265 (applicable toward the $1,675 tuition). For those accepted into the program,the $265 deposit is not refundable should you cancel your registration. However, if for any reason we are unable to accept your application, your deposit will be fully refunded.


Who Should Attend
This mentored program is designed for occupational therapists at all levels to enhance diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills. At least two years pediatric experience is preferred. Applicants must currently work with children with Sensory Processing Disorder. Applicants must provide a copy of a recent CV or resume detailing specific SPD work experience and training. Courses will typically be limited to 25 participants so each person can receive individualized training.


Continuing Education
Competency credentials are awarded to participants who demonstrate proficiency at the Level 1 course criteria. Participants receive credential certificates documenting completion of the specialized training in SPD.

STAR Institute for SPD is an AOTA Approved Provider of continuing education. Approximately 25.5 Professional Contact Hours (2.55 CEUs) are awarded for full completion of the program. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.

Daily Schedule
Most days will begin 8:30 or 9am and end at 5:00–5:30pm. A detailed daily schedule will be provided on the first day of the Mentorship program.

The following is an outline of the Level 1 Mentorship program lectures:

Assessment

• An understanding of SPD and the SPD subtypes
• Differential diagnosis of SPD subtypes
• Review of parent-report and standardized measures for assessing sensory and motor function
• Overview of standardized assessments: Understanding standards scoring systems and "Growth scales" based on Rasch measurement

Intervention

• Introduction to the STAR Treatment Model: The integration of basic principles of sensory integration intervention based on Ayres' original theory, and advanced treatment using our clinical reasoning methodology
• Use of the Sensory Matrix and the A SECRET model of treatment planning
• Note-writing in clinical practice
• Clues for writing an advanced synthesized evaluation report

Research

• State of the field: an overview of SPD research from STAR Institute and the SPD Scientific Work Group

Outcome Measurement

• Use of Goal Attainment Scaling and other standardized outcome measures that participants can use in their settings to evaluate treatment effectiveness

Family Engagement

• Methods of including families as partners in the treatment process and an understanding of how family and individual psychological dynamics affect OT treatment


Learning Objectives
The objective of STAR Institute's Level 1 Intensive Mentorship program is to provide participants with a basic understanding of the latest research in SPD and the ability to:

  • Differentiate subtypes of SPD.
  • Utilize clinical reasoning tools for intervention and home adaptation developed by Dr. Lucy Jane Miller and Dr. Sarah A. Schoen.
  • Recognize and develop realistic and functional goals using Goal Attainment Scaling.
  • Recognize the importance of engaging families in the treatment process.
  • Become familiar with appropriate tools to evaluate children with SPD.
  • Observe client session videos, analyze through clinical reasoning, and discuss treatment planning.
  • Become familiar with the STAR PROCESS Model for treatment.
  • Address family needs and desires.
  • Synthesize information in an OT assessment, write treatment notes using STAR’s clinical reasoning approach, communicate effectively with physicians and other members of a client’s team.

Cancellation Policy

We require a minimum of 15 participants to run each Off-site Level 1 Mentorship program. Thus, it is sometimes necessary to change the dates a session is offered or to cancel a session. Participants are contacted at the earliest opportunity in the event of a scheduling change or cancellation. However, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone a scheduled session up to 5 weeks before the beginning date of each course. Please consider this when making any non-refundable travel arrangements. If the program is cancelled, all payments will be refunded including the $265 program deposit.

The tuition less the $265 deposit will be refunded if STAR Institute receives notice of cancellation at least 15 business days prior to the program start date. The full tuition will be charged to participants who cancel 14 business days or less before the program start or who fail to appear for the program.
